A commission official set up by the Military Junta in power of Myanmar to supervise the upcoming elections said Thursday that the results of the largely disputed survey will be available by the end of January.
At a press conference in Naycyidaw, the capital of Myanmar, electoral officials said that six parties would present themselves for seats nationwide, while 51 other competition would be individual states or regions. The vote should be held in three phases from December 28, with two weeks between each phase, officials said.
The army announced the electoral regime in July, the first national vote since the 2021 coup which outed the democratically elected government of Myanmar and plunged the country into the civil war. He also set up an interim government with the military leader Min Aung Hlaing holding power as an interim president.
The army does not control all myanmar. Large expanses are administered by a range of armed militias, ethnic groups and pro-democracy fighters, some in open armed conflict with the power junta. During the press conference, Khin Maung Oo, member of the electoral council, noted 63 zones “which have security risks”.
“We will continue to work until we can hold [the vote]”He said.
The soldiers led the election as a means of ending the conflict. Critics have described the elections of silence, saying that the military would retain power regardless of the vote.
However, criticism of the elections is illegal in Myanmar. The state -run media reported on Wednesday that a 36 -year -old man in eastern Shan was sentenced to seven years of forced work for a Facebook publication which contained a video surveillance video and criticized the military junta for prioritizing public security elections.
It is the first condemnation known under a new law, promulgated in July, which criminalized the discourse or actions that could disrupt the elections or the tools used to carry it out.
