How Under Armor signed Stephen Curry far from Nike

Why Stephen Curry left Nike for the Underdog brand under Armor.

In 2013, Stephen Curry shocked the world of sneakers by signing with the athletics company then Upstart Under armor on basketball power Nike.

At the time, Nike controlled the vast majority of the NBA sneakers market. Under Armor was practically unknown in the basketball space.

“We are the oroundog brand. We are for those who may have been born not large enough or large enough or fairly fast, or strong enough, or quite intelligent or fairly intelligent,” said Kevin Plank, founder and CEO of sub-Armor.

“Curry Inc. CNBC Sport: Stephen Curry's affairs” will be present on CNBC on Wednesday June 4 at 9 p.m. he.

The agreement was considered a decisive moment in the commercial career of Curry, and it was done partly thanks to the Curry Case Comrade to the Golden State Warriors, Kent Bazemore.

Plank wanted Curry to be the first big star of the brand. But he knew that to sign a person from the caliber of Curry, the company had to think outside the track.

“We actually targeted Ken, and we just said that we are going to overwhelm Ken with more shock and fear of the product, service, history, love, hugs,” said Plank in an interview for “Curry Inc.”, a CNBC sport production focused on Curry's career and commercial ambitions. “About three months after the start of the Warriors season, and Curry is looking next to Ken. He says to himself:” Who is this brand from which you get all this attention? Because I'm with Nike, and I'm really not. “”

The new role of Stephen Curry will be as president of the Curry brand.

Under the brand of armor curry

It was not only the influence of Bazemore who landed at Curry at Under Armor.

There was also a sloppy Nike presentation in which the managers of the company badly pronounced its first name and used a set of recycled slides which always had the name of Kevin during above. In addition, Under Armor offered Curry an agreement worth $ 4 million a year, while Nike offered $ 2.5 million – and refused to correspond.

Today, 12 years later, Curry made a dozen different shoes for Baltimore -based armor and has developed a range of signature products that includes shoes and clothing. In 2023, the brand signed a new long -term extension and made Curry the newly formed Curry brand president, housed under the banner of the company.

As part of this agreement, the NBA All-Star 11 times received 8.8 million ordinary shares under Armor, worth $ 75 million at the time, in addition to other prices and incentives.

While Curry took advantage of its success in Under Armor, the brand had its share of ups and downs. Changes in leadership, strategy and competition led to a spectacular drop in the ordinary action of Under Armor, against a summit of $ 45.41 in 2016 at its current price of less than $ 6 per share.

Some speculate that disorders have embarrassed the outstanding prospects of curry.

“In all honesty, if he had stayed with Nike, his business would be a monster right now. A monster,” said Nico Harrison, director general of Dallas Mavericks who was director of sports marketing at Nike from 2002 to 2021, during an interview in 2022.

Raise the money

Curry told CNBC that his relationship with Under Armor had changed the way he thought of his business outside the field.

“It was the first time that I really took a equity position in the company, then you started to understand how every decision you take and how you use not only the brand of me, but all the resources and opportunities I have around me to create value,” he said.

Curry also said that Outsider's message from armor was resonated with him. Curry, only 6 feet 2 inches and 185 pounds, is not the typical size of a NBA superstar.

“The NBA was a goal, but I was not like offering myself to get there,” said Curry. “I took advantage of each stage of the path.”

He postponed the same mentality to his other companies with a mantra to “raise the sub -“.

As part of his contract with Under Armor, part of the annual income from the Curry brand is invested in subressource communities, such as Oakland, California. Curry became connected to Oakland after moving there when he became a warrior for the first time in 2009.

During the NBA All-Star weekend in February, Curry and Under Armor celebrated their renovation of the 20th Court at McClymonds secondary school in Oakland. The school has received free wooden wood floors, new hoops, backe panels and dashboards.

Under Armor says that the Curry brand has formed 15,000 coaches, supported 125 basketball programs and had an impact on 300,000 children worldwide.

Curry has also helped to open the way to golf minorities thanks to its underestimated golf tour. Sponsors like Under Armor Fund a series of regional tournaments to stimulate color junior golfers.

“The way I tried to be a pioneer on the field, we want to do exactly the same thing … By taking advantage of this impact with regard to what it does for the community,” said Curry.
