The Trump White House is reportedly ready to announce a proposal to extend Obamacare subsidies for two years. On Monday, the White House postponed the announcement of its health care proposal.
President Mike Johnson is the reason.
The Wall Street Journal reported:
Speaker Mike Johnson (R., La.) has warned the White House that most House Republicans have no appetite for expanding the Affordable Care Act’s enhanced subsidies, according to people familiar with the matter, showing how politically difficult it will be to avoid big increases in health care costs next year for many Americans.
Johnson’s message, in a phone call with administration officials, came as President Trump’s advisers were crafting a health plan extending the grants for two years.
The only problem is that there appear to be enough moderate Republican votes to pass an extension of the Obamacare subsidies if it came before the House.
It’s not that Mike Johnson doesn’t have the votes to extend the subsidies. This is because Mike Johnson does not want to extend the subsidies.
Hakeem Jeffries called out Johnson on CNN:
It seems to me that votes exist in the House of Representatives. As well as potentially in the Senate to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits. But unfortunately, House Republican leaders have no interest in doing so.
This is the same group of people who brought us this Republican health care crisis that is devastating people across the country.
Keep in mind. This year, Republicans, in their big ugly bill, passed the largest cut to Medicaid in American history. 14 million Americans are on the verge of losing their health insurance. As a result, hospitals, nursing homes and community health centers are closing across the country.
