It’s fair to wonder if any part of the Trump administration is living in reality. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt hadn’t held a press briefing in the past two weeks, but on Wednesday she took questions from reporters, and it didn’t go well.

Leavitt was asked who Trump was supposed to negotiate with in Iran, and she couldn’t answer.
The press officer said:
I will not go into detail about these negotiations and conversations that continue to take place.
As you can of course imagine, these are very sensitive diplomatic discussions. And I repeat, I remember giving you all the same answer when we were negotiating the ceasefire between Israel and Gaza, throughout the 12-day war between Iran and Israel. I have given you the same answer about many other global conflicts for which this administration has negotiated solutions.
President Trump will give his diplomats the freedom they need to conduct these sensitive diplomatic discussions without negotiating or litigating them through the media.

It seems increasingly likely that these negotiations are not real or that the Trump administration is negotiating with people who have no power to end the war.
Leavitt also had a message for voters who returned to Trump in 2024, which was not helpful at all for Republicans in 2026.
